A native tree that resembles beech but is a much smaller tree that spreads with age. Fluted grey bark.The ovate ribbed leaves turn yellow in the autumn and then turn to brown. Makes an excellent hedge and the leaves remain till spring. Likes heavy wet soil but also grows very well on chalky soils.
