Slow growing, lime tolerant, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy green leaves. White flowers, similar in shape to Lily-of-the-valley, appear in late Autumn or early Winter. At the same time the previous year's crop of small strawberry like fruits ripen to red. The fruit is used in Maderia to make a strong clear alcoholic drink. It will grow to 3 metres or so in good soil. It flowers and fruits best if trimmed.
